the boot

our neighbors in the mountains had warned us about the neighborhood foxes who like to steal shoes off your front porch.  we had been warned, but one night over thanksgiving, we (or should i say….i) forgot to bring in everyone’s snowy shoes overnight.  the next morning, we realized we had been paid a visit by our shoe-loving neighborhood fox.

although the foxes are larger than any foxes i’ve seen in denver, he didn’t take the big sorrel boot.  instead, he chose one of ava’s keen boots which was soft and fuzzy.  surely the daddy fox picked that one to nestle in his den for spring babies!  ava was a little distraught, but this was winter #2 that she has worn the boots, so they had been worn plenty.

i’m not sure if you’re familiar with the story the mitten, but we were certainly reminded of it.  we can only imagine what little baby fox will be warm and snuggled up her boot come winter/spring.  when joanne heard about the stolen boot, she texted mom this….

“have made up a story about the fox;)

a snow boot is what his little girl wants for christmas,

so the daddy fox went for it!  her toes are always cold and it makes her cry….

so he didn’t have a choice but to take it.

plus he’s watched ava play and knew she’d want to share because he has seen her be kind to others….

especially her little brothers.

this way, the little girl fox can be ava’s little sister in a way.

and maybe someday the fox family will leave ava a special gift in return:)
